Winter Writing Retreat
For Writers, Aspiring Writers and Writer-Curious
Whether you’ve had a book or short story project in mind for years, want to preserve treasured family tales for future generations, or just need time and space to consider your life path, writing is a powerful tool for self-reflection. We are thrilled that Elizabeth Bard, bestselling author of Lunch in Paris and Picnic in Provence, will lead La Belugue’s inaugural writing retreat, including sessions on food writing, personal narrative, and tricks & techniques. During this 5-night retreat you will lay the foundations for your individual writing project and create a road map to continue your progress at home. The natural beauty of the Provencal countryside will inspire your journey, as it has countless writers throughout history.
A word from Elizabeth:
“For me, writing is both a passion and a craft. Since I published my first book in 2010, I’m amazed at the number of readers who write to me saying they have their own stories to share. This week is about confronting the blank page – in writing and in life!”

Monday – Arrivals: A Room of One’s Own
Felicitations, you’ve jumped the first hurdle – you’ve cleared your schedule and given yourself the time and space to write and reflect! Settle into your room at La Belugue, take a deep breath in the garden and watch the sun set over the grape vines. We will cozy up by the fireplace for an aperitif, introductions, goal-setting and presentation of journals followed by dinner on the Farmtable of La Belugue.
Tuesday – Tasting the Past: Food and Memory
What does happiness taste like? The foods we love – or hate – often have a powerful connection to our past. After a scrumptous French breakfast at La Belugue we will take a short drive to beautiful medieval village of Cadenet for a truffle hunt and tasting at the Les Patras organic farm. In the afternoon we will focus on using food writing as a window into our personal narrative.
Wednesday – The Hero’s Journey: Defining your Personal Narrative
Every story is a hero’s journey, our characters begin in one place, and passing through life’s hills and valleys, end up in another. What is your journey? After breakfast, we will hike to a 12th century hilltop chapel for a picnic to widen our view. We’ll finish the day with a cooking class led by Elizabeth & Kelly, your host at La Belugue, followed by a tasting with our favorite local winemakers and dinner.
Thursday – Cezanne’s Apples: Changing Perspective and Finding the New Normal.
Great stories are built on small details, and sometimes a change in perspective can change history. We explore the markets and monuments of the historic city of Aix-en-Provence and visit Paul Cezanne’s studio to see how his painting techniques can help us with our storytelling. You will have some free time to enjoy lunch and shopping on your own.
Friday: Wind in Your Hair: What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
Often the key to a writing project, or a personal transformation – is getting out of our own way. After breakfast, we will travel to the picturesque seaside village of Cassis for a boat ride and bouillabaisse. Looking toward the horizon and sharing our week’s work, we’ll set fearless goals for the future.
Saturday: Spread your wings and fly:
After breakfast a final session of sharing and collaboration before you head off to your next chapter. This morning will be a free session of collaboration, story telling and sharing.
